Report: Flames expected to unveil new arena project Tuesday

The Calgary Flames will reportedly reveal proposed plans for a new sports complex Tuesday that would include a new hockey arena.

The project will involve three new facilities in total, according to Annalise Klingbeil and Trevor Howell from the Calgary Herald:

The (Flames) organization and public officials have remained vague about the exact details of the project many expect will combine a new arena for Calgary’s NHL team, a football stadium for the (CFL's) Stampeders and an amateur sports field house.

"It would all be combined together, all three,” Ward 5 Coun. Ray Jones said Monday. “I think it’s all just one giant building from what I understand of the plans.”

Jones saw an earlier version of the plans several months ago and said that, while they may have changed, the project is still expected to be large in scale.

“It’s a hell of proposal that they’re putting together,” Jones said, adding that the team is footing the majority of the bill.

Flames president Ken King teased the plans in an email last week, referring to it as "one of Calgary's most transformative projects."

The club has played in the Scotiabank Saddledome since 1983, when it was known as the Olympic Saddledome. The Flames have been considering replacing the building since 2007, according to the Herald.

The Stampeders have played in McMahon Stadium since it opened in 1960.

King was reportedly set to announce arena plans last November, but that proposal relied to some degree on public funding.
