Report: Red Wings buy out Stephen Weiss

Winslow Townson / USA Today

Stephen Weiss' disappointing tenure with the Detroit Red Wings is reportedly coming to a premature end.

The Red Wings have bought out the remainder of Weiss' contract, according to Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press. Detroit was not required to place Weiss on waivers prior to the buyout due to his no-trade clause.

Weiss recorded 29 points in 78 games over two seasons with the Red Wings, battling injuries and inconsistency along the way. The emergence of prospects like Gustav Nyquist and Tomas Tatar bumped Weiss down the depth chart to the point where he was often a healthy scratch.

Weiss had three seasons remaining on his five-year deal with an average annual value $4.9 million. His buyout will last six seasons, peaking at a $2.5 million cap hit in 2017-18.
