Red Wings' Holland says changes for next season will come from within organization
The playoffs have not yet concluded, but already the Detroit Red Wings are getting their ducks in a line for next season.
The Red Wings fell to the Tampa Bay Lightning – who will play the Chicago Blackhawks in the Stanley Cup Final – in the first round and though an early exit suggests changes need to be made, general manager Ken Holland believes such changes should come from within.
"Let's see what young players are ready to play full-time in Detroit," Holland told MLive.com's Ansar Khan. "Part of (improvement) has to be internal, the development of these young players. Can we make a move that makes us a little better? That's what we'll explore over the next month."
The Red Wings have become the model franchise when it comes to filling out a roster with homegrown talent, something Holland says has impacted the way the team's front office operates.
"We tried to do some things in the last 2-3 years and in many cases our kids were better than the moves we made," said Holland. "Our kids are pretty good. We need them to continue to develop and get better."
Holland says other teams have already started kicking tires on possible moves heading into the draft, but just how active the Red Wings will be come June 26 is yet to be seen.
