Report: Oilers to name McLellan head coach Tuesday

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

Todd McLellan will reportedly be the next head coach of the Edmonton Oilers.

The team is expected to introduce McLellan at a news conference on Tuesday at 2 p.m. MT, according to Sportsnet's Gene Principe.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported earlier Monday that a formal announcement was expected this week and could come as early as Tuesday.

Last week, Friedman reported that McLellan would be hired by the Oilers barring a major breakdown in talks.

Edmonton general manager Peter Chiarelli reportedly met with McLellan in the Czech Republic, where the head coach guided Canada to a gold medal at the World Hockey Championship.

McLellan and the San Jose Sharks parted ways in April. He spent seven seasons with the organization, winning three division titles and the Presidents' Trophy in 2009.

The Oilers fired head coach Dallas Eakins in December. The club went 17-25-9 under interim head coach Todd Nelson.
