Stars' Jamie Benn may need 4-5 months to recover from 2 hip surgeries

Jerome Miron / USA Today

Jamie Benn had quite the year for the Dallas Stars, but it came at a price.

The forward, who led the league in regular-season scoring with 87 points, underwent arthroscopic surgery on his hip Monday to shave off a growth on the head of his femur and repair cartilage damage.

It was the second hip surgery in a week for the 25-year-old, who underwent surgery on his opposite hip the Monday before.

Benn is expected to miss four-to-five months, Stars head athletic trainer Dave Zeis told The Dallas Morning News.

Zeis said that Benn responded well to the surgeries and could be skating in August, which would make him ready for the start of the regular season if his recovery goes according to plan.

Benn suffers from femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) where bone spurs form on the head of the femur. The spurs can irritate and cut the labrum in the hip socket, which can lead to immense pain.

Benn joins teammates Trevor Daley, Ales Hemsky, John Klingberg and Valeri Nichushkin as Stars who have undergone hip surgery in the last year.
