Canadiens advance to 2nd round as Price shuts door to send Senators home

Jean-Yves Ahern / USA Today

Third time was a charm for Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens.

Price stopped all 43 shots he faced as Montreal prevailed in its third opportunity to eliminate the Ottawa Senators, advancing to the second round with a 2-0 victory in Game 6 on Sunday.

Brendan Gallagher scored the winning goal in the first period and Max Pacioretty added an empty-netter in the final second of the contest as the Canadiens avenged a 2013 playoff upset at the hands of the Senators.

Star Performer: Price rebounded from allowing five goals on 25 shots in Game 5 with his best performance of the series. He stopped 13 shots in the first period, 16 in the second and 14 in the third for his fifth career postseason shutout.

Turning Point: Ottawa thought it tied the game midway through the second period, but the Canadiens were saved by the referee's quick whistle on the play. The Senators generated more chances in the latter stages of the game, but they needed some better luck to beat Price.

Goalie Comparison: Craig Anderson played well, but he was no match for Price. Montreal managed only seven shots over the final 40 minutes, but the Canadiens did all the damage they needed in their 13-shot first period.

Goalie Shots GA Saves SV%
Price 43 0 43 1.000
Anderson 19 1 18 .947

Top Highlight: Gallagher displayed some excellent hand-eye coordination on his goal. He spun around to bat the puck out of midair after a shot deflected off his body in the slot to score the eventual series-clincher.

Stat of the Night: Price is the only netminder to record a shutout against Ottawa in 2014-15.
