3 things you need to know about the weekend in the NHL

Every Monday, we take a look back at the games from the weekend to get you caught up on all the news you may have missed.

Even the pesky Flames can't beat Senators

Sunday featured an intriguing matchup between two of the hottest teams in the NHL that contained serious playoff implications.

The Ottawa Senators were 8-1-1 going into the game hosted by the Calgary Flames, a squad that was 4-1 without injured captain Mark Giordano.

Both teams were in the hunt for playoff spots, with Ottawa trying to chase down the Boston Bruins and the Flames trying to hold off the Los Angeles Kings and San Jose Sharks.

This game looked to be a laugher for two periods, with the Senators making a mockery of Flames goalie Karri Ramo and eventually chasing out the netminder.

In skated Jonas Hiller, and after one tremendous save, the momentum swung Calgary's way. They managed to tie the game 4-4, forcing overtime and an eventual shootout.

Ottawa, however, is just so hot right now, and not even the Flames' resiliency could stop them.

A shootout goal from Erik Karlsson in the sixth round helped the Senators walk away victorious and prove to the NHL that their season isn't close to over, and that Boston should watch out.

Seguin makes long-awaited return

Dallas Stars forward Tyler Seguin played in his first game Saturday since suffering a knee injury on Feb. 13, scoring two goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The goals were the 30th and 31st of the season for the 23-year-old.

Seguin missed 10 games and, despite the injury, sits second in team scoring behind only Jamie Benn and in the top 10 in goals scored in the NHL.

The chances of the Stars making the playoffs are slim, but they're still alive, and the addition of Seguin certainly helps.

More Maple Leafs drama

One of the biggest stories on trade deadline day was the Dion Phaneuf-Detroit Red Wings rumor, which had the Toronto Maple Leafs captain heading to the Motor City. The deal never came to fruition, but talks may continue in the offseason.

The Maple Leafs also got word that defenseman Stephane Robidas is finished for the season with a shoulder injury that will require surgery.

The veteran blue-liner has been playing though injuries and managed seven points in 51 games for Toronto.

Finally, Nazem Kadri was sent home before practice Sunday after missing a team meeting. The forward did show up to the team's practice facility, but not on time.

"He missed a meeting, so I sent him home," Horachek said. "He showed up, but not when I was doing it."

Kadri will be available to play Monday against the New York Islanders, but the Leafs coach said he has not decided if Kadri will get into the game.

"He is available ... if I want him," Horachek said.
