Alex Ovechkin becomes Capitals' all-time points leader

Alex Ovechkin added another milestone to his impressive NHL resume.

Ovechkin recorded an assist on Nicklas Backstrom's first-period goal during Tuesday's game against the Calgary Flames, becoming the Capitals' all-time franchise points leader.

The assist was made as Ovechkin's point shot was deftly deflected by Backstrom, his long-time running mate.

Ovechkin added another assist and has now recorded 428 goals and 399 assists in 691 career games, passing Peter Bondra as the club's all-time leading scorer. 

Bondra collected his 825 points in 961 career games for the Capitals, and offered the following statement regarding Ovechkin's achievement:

It has been a thrill to watch Alex play for the Capitals during his young, illustrious career. He is an extremely talented player and I couldn’t be happier for him on achieving this great milestone. I extend to him my most sincere congratulations for passing my mark and becoming Washington’s franchise points leader. I wish him good luck in the rest of his career as he continues to rewrite the Capitals’ history books.
