Coyotes, Boedker talking contract extension; won't negotiate once season starts
The Arizona Coyotes and forward Mikkel Boedker have engaged in talks regarding a possible contract extension, but according to Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports, negotiations will be put on hold until season's end if a deal isn't reached before opening night.
Drafted eighth overall by the Coyotes in 2008, Boedker seemed to finally hit his stride last season, scoring 19 goals and adding 32 assists, both career highs. As he nears the end of a two-year, $5.1-million contract, it's clear that another big year will net him long-term security at a much higher valuation.
With a new season set to begin, head coach Dave Tippett believes Boedker is right on the cusp of becoming one of the club's biggest assets.
"As he continues to emerge or grow as a player, more opportunity comes his way and with more opportunity, we're hoping for more results," Tippett said. "His skill set is excellent. I think he's just had to continue to mature into a good NHL player, and that's what you're seeing right now. He's going to be a valuable player on our team."
For his part, Boedker realizes some players develop more quickly than others, and he's focused on making sure he brings a full effort to the table once again this season.
"You figure it out along the way, right?" Boedker said. "Obviously, it's not just going to come. I'm no Sidney Crosby or Steven Stamkos, for that matter. But it took some time, a long learning curve, but obviously it's going well now and now it's just grab it and go. That's all that's on my mind right now."
With captain Shane Doan heading into the golden years of his NHL career, Boedker will only become a more important player for Arizona, meaning a decent pay day should be forthcoming.
