Detroit's elite were on hand Thursday as the Ilitch family joined the municipality to break ground on the Red Wings' new $450 million arena - the principal structure surrounding a plan to revive and celebrate the city's downtown core.

The arena is set to open in the summer of 2017 after their proposal was green-lighted over the summer months.
