Frozen Four hero signs with Blackhawks' AHL affiliate

Eric Hartline / Us Presswire

The Rockford IceHogs - AHL affiliate of the Chicago Blackhawks - signed former Minnesota Golden Gophers defenseman Justin Holl to a one-year contract Monday.

Holl launched himself into Minnesota hockey history during the 2014 Frozen Four tournament when he scored the winning goal in the semifinal game against North Dakota in the final second of regulation.

It remains to be seen whether or not Holl, who recorded 38 points in 152 games over four seasons with the Golden Gophers, can translate his heroics to the pro level, but he will be competing with other Blackhawks blue-line hopefuls like Stephen Johns, Adam Clendening and Trevor van Riemsdyk.

Chicago drafted Holl in the second round (54th overall) in 2010.
