Los Angeles Kings assistant coach John Stevens may be the latest championship sidekick to graduate into a head coaching position.

Stevens began his coaching career with the Philadelphia Flyers' AHL affiliate after a serious eye injury forced him to retire as a player. He worked his way up to the big club and succeeded Ken Hitchcock after he was fired early in the 2006 season.

Stevens would hold the Flyers' post for parts of four seasons before being let go in 2009. From there, he signed a three-year deal with the Kings as an assistant, winning two Stanley Cups.

In 267 games running an NHL bench, Stevens sports a 122-111-34 record.

The Penguins are also reportedly prepared to interview Marc Crawford and Ron Wilson while the Hurricanes have been linked to New York Rangers assistant Ulf Samuelsson
