Report: Wild closing in on extension with coach Yeo

by May 31, 10:29 AM

The Minnesota Wild are closing in on a multi-year contract extension with head coach Mike Yeo, according to The Star Tribune's Michael Russo

Although Russo reported earlier this week that negotiations between the two sides had stalled, he now says that all signs point to an agreement being worked out soon, with Yeo and general manager Chuck Fletcher reportedly heading to owner Craig Leipold's home in the Bahamas on Saturday for further meetings.

Yeo, the NHL's youngest head coach at 40-years-old, has led the Wild to a 104-82-26 record during his three year tenure, including two straight appearances in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Wild announce extension with head coach Mike Yeo

by May 31, 5:13 PM

Continuing to lead the Minnesota Wild in the right direction, head coach Mike Yeo was rewarded for his efforts Saturday, agreeing to a multi-year contract extension with the upstart club.

Since being hired in 2011, the Wild have seen progressive improvements under Yeo each season. After missing the playoffs in his first year behind the bench, Minnesota was bounced in the first round last season before taking the Chicago Blackhawks to six games in their second-round series this year.

The third coach in franchise history, Yeo boasts the team's best winning percentage. His .552 mark betters that of his predecessors, Jacques Lemaire and Todd Richards.

Terms of the deal have not yet been announced, but Michael Russo of The Minneapolis Star Tribune believes that it will be for three years at nearly $3 million.

Contract negotiations progressing slowly between Wild, coach Yeo

by May 27, 3:31 PM

Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo, the NHL's youngest bench boss, was expected to agree to a lucrative contract extension with the Minnesota Wild shortly after they were eliminated in the second round by the Chicago Blackhawks. Certainly when Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher told fans and the media that "Mike Yeo's the coach of our hockey team," an extension between the two sides seemed like a foregone conclusion.

Negotiations between the two sides appear to have stalled, however, reports the Minneapolis Star-Tribune's Michael Russo:

Early last week, Yeo and Fletcher met regarding his contract situation. Yeo (and the rest of the coaching staff) has a contract that expires June 30. Yeo, whose last contract paid him approximately $600,000 in the final year of his deal, is likely looking to double his salary.

After the initial meeting, Yeo left for a fishing trip and is scheduled to return Wednesday. The two sides weren’t expected to talk during his trip, so talks should continue once he returns. Like I reported May 15-17, this was bound to take a little time. When Yeo took the job right out of Houston in 2011, there was basically no negotiation. He has since guided the Wild into the playoffs in two consecutive years of a three-year deal and guided the Wild into the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 2003. So, this contract would require an actual negotiation, and frankly, that’s the position the Wild put itself in by not giving Yeo a one-year contract extension last summer.

Yeo and the rest of Minnesota's coaching staff are forbidden from talking to other clubs about any coaching vacancies without the Wild's permission through the end of the season (like players, coaches are signed through June 30th). Also, it's still most likely that Yeo remains in Minnesota.

Things could get interesting, however, if the Pittsburgh Penguins were to hire a new general manager that fires Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma. Bylsma and Yeo have some history from their days in Pittsburgh, but more importantly, Bylsma and Fletcher have some history from their Penguins days, as well. Yeo may have the leverage at the moment, but if Bylsma hits the market, that changes in a hurry.

Wild GM Fletcher: 'Mike Yeo's the coach of our team'

by May 16, 1:06 PM
Brace Hemmelgarn / USA TODAY Sports

Minnesota Wild head coach Mike Yeo, whose contract will expire at the conclusion of this hockey season, received a very public endorsement from Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher on Friday. According to Fletcher, the Wild and Yeo will work out the terms of a new deal shortly:

Yeo's coaching, and his stylistic adjustment to the way the Wild play with the puck through the neutral zone, helped guide the Wild to their second straight Stanley Cup playoff berth in a tough Western Conference despite a myriad of injuries at mid-season. Yeo is the youngest current bench boss in the National Hockey League.

Report: Wild, head coach Mike Yeo expected to agree on new contract in coming days

by May 14, 5:07 PM

Fresh off a playoff series loss at the hands of the Chicago Blackhawks, Minnesota Wild head coach Mike Yeo finds himself as a free agent of sorts, as his contract with the team only ran through the 2013-14 NHL season.

However, there appears to be mutual interest between the two sides in terms of a new deal, which seems set to be agreed upon sooner than later.

Graff added that contract discussions between Yeo and the Wild have not yet begun, but it's expected to be "a pretty swift process."

The 40-year-old has been behind the Wild bench for three seasons, and has led the team to a record of 104-82-26 with two playoff appearances during that time.
