Flames forward Mikael Backlund is surprised that his named is being mentioned in recent trade speculation.

However, Backlund conceded that it's just part of being a pro athlete and admitted he's not off to the best of starts in Calgary.

In 22 games this season, Backlund has scored two goals and five assists, with a minus-six rating and 34 shots on goal.

The Flames will adopt Brian Burke's pre-Christmas trade policy, which means Backlund could be moved at some point prior to Dec. 9.

Report: Flames willing to trade Mikael Backlund

by Nov 22, 7:24 PM

The Calgary Flames are willing to deal forward Mikael Backlund, their first round pick from the 2007 NHL Draft. According to Darren Dreger of TSN, a handful of teams have expressed interest in the 24-year old forward.

The Flames have made a couple of moves recently, acquiring defenseman Ladislav Smid from the Edmonton Oilers, and sending forward Tim Jackman to the Anaheim Ducks. A deal involving Backlund would signal a firm shift in a new direction for the Flames, moving on from a player who was once seen as a significant part of the team's future.

In 191 games for the Flames, Backlund has scored 25 goals and 43 assists, and has battled various injuries over the years that have hindered his production.

Earlier this season, Backlund was a healthy scratch for the Flames (Oct. 30), and he has registered just two assists in the month of November.
