NHL Game Summary - Montreal at Toronto
Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - John Mitchell scored the winner in the third round of the shootout as the Toronto Maple Leafs took a 3-2 decision over the Montreal Canadiens.
In the third round, Mitchell slammed on the brakes in front of the net and hammered the puck into the net. Jonas Gustavsson then made a body save on Brian Gionta's wrister to seal the win.
Tyler Bozak had a goal and an assist while Phil Kessel scored the other goal for the Maple Leafs, who have won three straight and six of seven. Gustavsson made 25 saves in the win.
"We feel really good about this game," said Bozak. "We're a young group, but we're a confident group and we're just gonna keep riding this winning streak as long as we can."
Gionta scored both goals while Jaroslav Halak made 31 stops in the loss for the Canadiens, who were riding a season-high six-game winning streak coming into the game.
The Canadiens now have 79 points and are in a virtual three-way tie with Ottawa and Philadelphia for the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference.
"We got one point, but there are some things we have to improve on," said Halak. "We need every point we can get, but we'd rather have gotten two tonight."
The Maple Leafs grabbed the initial lead with 3:55 left in the first on a power-play tally as Bozak's backhander found the back of the net, but Montreal tied the game with 34 seconds left in the frame on Gionta's 22nd goal of the year.
Toronto grabbed a 2-1 lead late in the second period. Skating down the left wing, Nikolai Kulemin threw a pass over to the right side where Kessel fired a wrister into the left corner of the net with 1:45 to play in the frame.
Skating on the power play in the third period the Habs tied the game as Scott Gomez blasted a pass from the right point that Gionta redirected into the net with 6:06 left.
