Dolphins GM: We'll decide on Dion Jordan's future 'once we see him'

Miami Dolphins defensive end Dion Jordan is one of the biggest draft busts in recent memory, and he could be down to his final chance with the organization that took him third overall in 2013.

The Dolphins traded up nine spots with the Oakland Raiders to select Jordan out of Oregon. For their efforts, Jordan was suspended three times, including a sanction that held him out of the 2015 season due to a violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

Commissioner Roger Goodell will likely reinstate Jordan ahead of the 2016 season, but the 25-year-old will need to prove himself to new general manager Chris Grier and head coach Adam Gase.

"I think everyone needs to prove something," Grier said to Adam Beasley of the Miami Herald. "We talk about creating a competitive environment with guys that want to be a Miami Dolphin and want to be here and love the game and compete. Obviously, what happens whether he gets reinstated or not from that point we'll make that decision once we see him and get him in the building."

With the Dolphins looking to avoid the mistakes of their previous regime, Jordan will need to prove himself immediately.

"We're going to run a meritocracy," Dolphins vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said. "I know (Dolphins owner) Steve (Ross) feels that way, Adam feels that way. Once he's reinstated it's another opportunity for us to improve the team. But ultimately the best players will play."

Jordan's talent was considered immense coming out of college, but he's never been able to sustain a prolonged period of productivity in the NFL. With his window of opportunity closing, Jordan will need to be a model citizen under Gase's and Grier's watch.
