Cam Newton earns Offensive Player of the Year award

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year at Saturday's NFL Honors award show.

Newton was also named MVP after scoring a league-best 45 touchdowns. The Panthers' star threw for 3,837 passing yards and 35 touchdowns, adding 636 rushing yards and 10 more scores.

With the Panthers preparing for Super Bowl 50, Newton's father, Cecil, accepted the award on his behalf.

Newton was selected as a first-team All-Pro for the first time in his career and was selected to the Pro Bowl for the third time.

The 26-year-old is widely considered to be one of the first players to bridge the gap between a traditional pocket passer and a mobile quarterback, becoming the first player to record over 30 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in the same year.

Newton became the first player in Panthers history to win Offensive Player of the Year and MVP.
