The San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with former rugby star Jarryd Hayne, with the team announcing Saturday that they have waived the running back.

The 49ers promoted running back Kendall Gaskins from the practice squad to fill Hayne's roster spot.

After a successful preseason, impressing in the backfield and as a returner, Hayne was unable to translate that success to the regular season, only totaling eight carries in the first seven weeks of the season.

Hayne sent out a tweet after his release, indicating that if he clears waivers, he'll return to the 49ers and join the practice squad.

The Australian made headlines by moving away from rugby - where he was one of the sport's best players - to try and make an NFL roster.

After successfully making the 49ers' final 53, Hayne became a draw for international audiences. He had one of the highest selling jerseys in the league and helped break TV viewership records in Australia for the NFL.
