Miami Dolphins defensive end Cameron Wake will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn Achilles tendon, the team announced on Friday.

The bad news was expected after Wake went down in Thursday's loss to the New England Patriots. Achilles tears are relatively straightforward to diagnose on the field, with MRIs performed to confirm the initial diagnosis.

The injury occurred just as Wake and the Dolphins' defensive line was starting to gain momentum. After the unit registered just one sack over its first four games, Wake alone has seven sacks in the three games since.

He'll finish the season with those seven sacks. At 33 years old, Wake won't face a lengthy rehab process and race to be ready in time for the 2016 season.

Wake's set to earn just over $8 million next season in the final year of his deal with the Dolphins. It's not out of the question he's played his last game with the team.
