Redskins name Kirk Cousins as Week 1 starter

The Washington Redskins named Kirk Cousins as their Week 1 starting quarterback, head coach Jay Gruden announced Monday.

Turning to Cousins was thought to be a realistic possibility as Robert Griffin III continues to deal with a concussion suffered last week, but Gruden indicated that the move isn't temporary.

"I think all three quarterbacks should be commended for their efforts, their willingness to get better ... But when it's all said and done ... we feel like at this time Kirk Cousins gives us the best chance to win."

While Griffin was named the starter heading into the offseason, and seemingly continued in that role until being forced to the sidelines with the concussion, Gruden explained that he only made that February announcement to avoid repeated questions about a quarterback competition.

After suffering a concussion in last week's game, and recently being recommended to take one-to-two weeks of rest before being re-evaluated, Griffin won't be tested again until next week, according to USA Today's Tom Pelissero.

Griffin hasn't yet been ruled out for the season opener, and Gruden insisted that the team remains confident in his ability. The definitive decision to go with Cousins, however, will only raise more questions about the former first-round pick and his future with the team.

Reports emerged Sunday indicating that Washington's ownership was resisting the front office's efforts to move on from Griffin entirely, just three years after landing him with the No. 2 overall pick in 2012.

Cousins has often filled in for Griffin since joining the Redskins in the fourth round of the same 2012 draft, leading the team to a 2-7 record in nine starts over three seasons.

He saw action with the first-team offense for Saturday's third preseason game, throwing for 190 yards, one touchdown, and one interception.
