The St. Louis Rams are adding former NFL quarterback Jeff Garcia to their coaching staff as an offensive assistant, Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

Garcia interviewed for the Rams' quarterbacks coaching job in February, but was passed over in favor of Chris Weinke. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said at the scouting combine he was just as impressed by Garcia as he was by Weinke.

"It was almost as if he was getting ready to go out and play a game," Fisher said at the time. "He's just that guy. He's so competitive. Throughout his career, people said he couldn't do what he did. He takes great care of himself. He’s passionate about the game. He loves the game. His dad was a coach. It's in him."

Garcia was voted to the Pro Bowl four times during his 11-year NFL career, including three consecutive seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. He holds the 49ers' single-season passing yards record with 4,278, which he set in 2000.
