Patriots agree to terms with Fred Davis on 1-year deal

Adding yet another potential playmaker to an already strong tight end position, the New England Patriots have agreed to terms with veteran free agent Fred Davis on a one-year contract.

Davis spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Washington Redskins, before sitting out the entire 2014 season due to a third violation of the league's substance abuse policy.

The signing certainly comes with some risk, given both his suspension history and several other off-field issues, but Davis will provide the Patriots' offense with another intriguing weapon in the passing game as they look to defend their Super Bowl title.

Davis' most productive season with the Redskins came back in 2011, when he hauled in 59 receptions for 796 yards and three touchdowns in just 12 games.

While he's struggled to make much of an impact since then, the Patriots have long been known for getting the most out of their players, and Davis will have the opportunity to earn a key rotational role in the offense this season.
