Dolphins sign Joe Philbin to 1-year contract extension

Andrew Weber / US PRESSWIRE

The Miami Dolphins have given Joe Philbin a vote of confidence.

Miami inked its head coach to a one-year contract extension, owner Stephen Ross announced.

The move doesn't necessarily mean Philbin is safe for the foreseeable future, though. He's now signed through 2016, but his efforts this season will likely determine his long-term fate with the Dolphins.

In three years with the team, Philbin has never taken Miami to the playoffs. Anything less than a postseason appearance in 2015 and Philbin will likely be gone.

The extension is similar to the one New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin agreed to recently. New York added a year to Coughlin's deal so he wouldn't be a lame duck in 2015.

With the team dishing out major money to bring in Ndamukong Suh to improve the defense, the Dolphins will be expecting big things this season.
