Raiders, Chargers to propose joint NFL stadium in Carson, California

Jake Roth / USA TODAY Sports

Struggling to get new stadiums in their own cities, the San Diego Chargers and Oakland Raiders are looking elsewhere to get the job done.

The teams are working on a joint proposal that would see them build and share a stadium in Carson, California.

"We are pursuing this stadium option in Carson for one straightforward reason: If we cannot find a permanent solution in our home markets, we have no alternative but to preserve other options to guarantee the future economic viability of our franchises," the organizations told Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times.

Farmer notes that the project would cost around $1.7 billion and it is set to be announced on site Friday.

Both organizations will continue to pursue a stadium in their own markets and will move forward with the Carson plan if they can't get something worked out by the end of the year.

The Giants and Jets are currently the only two NFL teams that share a stadium, but they are not division rivals. That could make things between the Chargers and Raiders a little more complicated.
