Weekend Sports In Brief

NFL

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) J.J. Watt danced, Jimmy Graham dunked, Odell Beckham Jr. dazzled. The Pro Bowl in the desert was all about having a good time.

Few moved very fast, no one flattened a quarterback and there were no bone-jarring hits in the gentle, friendly version of football played Sunday.

Even in a game dominated by offense, Watt was the star. The Texans defensive end intercepted pass, recovered a fumble and led the crowd in dances during commercial breaks.

Team Irvin defeated 32-28 Watt's Team Carter, but the score doesn't matter in the NFL's All-Star game.

Saints tight end Jimmy Graham's second touchdown, on a 1-yard, fourth-down pass from Matt Ryan, was the winning TD with 3:10 to play.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Saying his team ''followed every rule to the letter,'' New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick described in detail how his team prepares its footballs on game day and defended his players from chatter that they made it to the Super Bowl by cheating.

''At no time was there any intent whatsoever to try to compromise the integrity of the game or to gain an advantage,'' Belichick said in an unscheduled availability on Saturday afternoon, eight days before the Patriots will play the Seattle Seahawks for the NFL championship.

Speaking once again with authority on a topic he previously professed ignorance of, Belichick said the team conducted an internal study on the process of getting game balls ready. Most of the steps are designed to make them tackier, which has a noticeable effect on how it feels, he said, but the process could also affect the pressure inside the ball, which is harder to tell by touch.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Mike Krzyzewski earned his 1,000th career win, making him the first NCAA Division I men's coach to reach the milestone, when No. 5 Duke surged past St. John's in the second half for a 77-68 victory at Madison Square Garden.

Tyus Jones scored 22 points and the Blue Devils (17-2) went on an 18-2 run down the stretch to put Coach K in four figures on his first try.

When the final horn sounded, Blue Devils players engulfed Krzyzewski and he received a bear hug from assistant Jeff Capel. Photographers swarmed the coach on the court, and players were given T-shirts that read ''1,000 Wins And Kounting.''

A public address announcement offered congratulations to Krzyzewski, and Duke fans at a packed Garden chanted his name and held aloft ''K'' signs.

NHL

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - It was enough to give a goalie nightmares: A record 29 goals, 25 players with at least two points and eight with at least four.

In addition to the high-profile superstars who didn't make it to Ohio's capital city for the NHL All-Star game, defense also took a holiday.

John Tavares of the New York Islanders matched a record with four goals, and Team Toews beat Team Foligno 17-12 on Sunday night in the highest-scoring NHL All-Star game.

It was the most goals in the event's 60-year history, eclipsing the 26-goal burst in North America's 14-12 victory over the World in 2001.

NBA

ATLANTA (AP) - Paul Millsap scored 20 points and Al Horford added 19 as Eastern Conference-leading Atlanta extended its franchise-record winning streak to 16 games with a 112-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Jeff Teague finished with 15 points and seven of Atlanta's 30 assists as the Hawks won for the 30th time in 32 games.

The Hawks took their first double-digit lead on Mike Scott's three-point play at the 9:31 mark of the second quarter, and their biggest advantage was 18 on a 3 by Millsap late in the second. Minnesota trimmed the lead to twice in the closing minutes, but couldn't get any closer.

GOLF

LA QUINTA, Calif. (AP) - Bill Haas pulled off another imaginative escape to win the Humana Challenge.

Far less dramatic or lucrative than the shot he splashed out of the water to 3 feet in a playoff victory in the 2011 Tour Championship, Haas came through with another bold play Sunday after his drive on the par-5 18th stopped on top of the front lip of a right fairway bunker.

Standing in the sand with the ball in dormant grass at nearly waist level, he choked up on an 8-iron and whacked the ball 80 yards down the fairway. That left him 170 yards and he hit another 8-iron safely to the middle of the green to set up his winning two-putt par. He closed with a 5-under 67 for a one-stroke win at 22-under 266 for his sixth PGA Tour title.

Matt Kuchar (67), Charley Hoffman (64), Brendan Steele (64), Steve Wheatcroft (67) and Sung Joon Park (65) tied for second.

KAUPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - Miguel Angel Jimenez rallied to win the Champions Tour's season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship, birdieing six of the final nine holes for a one-stroke victory over Mark O'Meara.

The Spaniard closed with a 6-under 66 for his second victory in three career starts on the 50-and-over tour. He broke a tie with O'Meara with a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th.

Jimenez finished at 17-under 199 at Hualalai Golf Club. O'Meara shot a 64. The two-time Champions Tour winner finished second for the 15th time.

FIGURE SKATING

GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Jason Brown won his first U.S. title, holding off Adam Rippon thanks to his big lead after the short program.

Joshua Farris, skating last, had a chance to overtake Brown on Sunday, but one of his triple-jump combinations didn't count because he did a double toe loop three different times. It was still a successful event for Farris, who finished third to earn a chance to go to the world championships.

Rippon became the first man to win back-to-back world junior titles in 2009, but had struggled to live up to that promise in the senior ranks. He had just one medal at the U.S. Championships before Sunday, a silver in 2012, and was eighth last year.

Brown finished with 274.98 points to beat Rippon by 2.5. Rippon won the free skate with 187.77.
