PRO FOOTBALL

IRVING, Texas (AP) NFL rushing leader DeMarco Murray has a broken left hand in what could be a damaging blow to the playoff hopes of the Dallas Cowboys.

Murray was set for surgery Monday and might be sidelined Sunday at home against Indianapolis, already a playoff qualifier. Even though the Cowboys just beat Philadelphia to take the NFC East lead, they might have to win both of their remaining games to end a four-year postseason drought.

Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said on his radio show that it was ''probably a tough expectation'' that Murray would play against Indianapolis (10-4), though he wouldn't rule it out.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The NFL Players Association filed a federal lawsuit for Adrian Peterson, asking the court to dismiss an arbitration ruling that upheld the NFL's suspension of the star running back.

The petition also requested a court order for Peterson's immediate reinstatement, arguing that Peterson has served far more than what's allowed by the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the players. Attorneys for the NFLPA asked to expedite the case in Minnesota, where the union has often gone to contest labor matters with the NFL.

Commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Peterson without pay for the last six games of this season and through at least April 15, the result of the child-abuse case that has kept the 2012 NFL MVP out of all but one game this year. Harold Henderson, the arbitrator - and former NFL executive - appointed to hear Peterson's appeal, affirmed the entirety of Goodell's decision Friday.

The union argued that Henderson's decision was biased and overreaching, contrary to ''fundamental principles of notice, fairness and consistency'' and the essence of the CBA.

BASEBALL

NEW YORK (AP) - Chase Headley is staying with the Yankees, agreeing to a $52 million, four-year contract that signals New York is not counting on Alex Rodriguez to play third base regularly.

Coming off a season-long suspension for violations of baseball's drug agreement and labor contract, Rodriguez is owed $61 million over the final three seasons of his $275 million, 10-year deal. The agreement with Headley is a sign New York plans to shift A-Rod to designated hitter, relegate him to a backup role or perhaps even seek trade offers.

The 30-year-old Headley was fifth in NL MVP voting in 2012 after hitting .286 with 31 homers and 115 RBIs for San Diego. He also won the Gold Glove at third base. Headley slumped to a .250 average, 13 homers and 50 RBIs the following year and was batting .229 with seven homers and 32 RBIs when the Padres traded him to the Yankees on July 22. He batted .262 with six homers and 17 RBIs in 191 at-bats for New York.

CHICAGO (AP) - Jon Lester and the Chicago Cubs finalized a $155 million, six-year contract that they agreed to during the winter meetings last week, setting baseball records for largest signing bonus and biggest upfront payment.

Lester receives a record $30 million signing bonus, of which $15 million is due by April 1, $2.5 million each by Dec. 31 in 2018 and 2019, and a final $10 million installment by Sept. 15, 2020. He gets salaries of $15 million next year, $20 million each in 2016 and 2017, $22.5 apiece in 2018 and 2019 and $15 million in 2020. There is a $25 million mutual option for 2021 with a $10 million buyout, and the option would become guaranteed if Lester pitches 200 or more innings in 2020 or 400 or more in 2020-21 combined.

CHICAGO (AP) - The White Sox finalized a $42 million, three-year contract with free agent Melky Cabrera, bolstering their outfield with their latest big move in an impressive offseason.

Cabrera will make $13 million in 2015, $14 million in 2016 and $15 million in the final season of the contract, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. The agreement also includes limited trade provision for the 30-year-old left fielder, who hit .301 with 16 homers and 73 RBIs in 139 games with Toronto last season.

HOUSTON (AP) - Infielder Jed Lowrie and the Houston Astros have agreed to a $23 million, three-year contract.

Lowrie receives salaries of $8 million next year, $7.5 million in 2016 and $6.5 million in 2017. Houston has a $6 million option for 2018 with a $1 million buyout. A switch-hitter, Lowrie had 35 home runs and 155 RBIs over the last three seasons.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Outfielder Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals came to terms on a $7.5 million, two-year contract, avoiding a grievance hearing.

Harper will receive salaries of $2.5 million in 2015, and $5 million in 2016 from the reigning NL East champions, according to a person familiar with the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Harper, the 2012 NL Rookie of the Year, had been scheduled to have a $1 million salary in 2015, along with the chance to earn up to $500,000 in roster bonuses. But the Major League Baseball Players Association filed a grievance on his behalf over whether he could void the final season of the $9.9 million, five-year contract he signed when he was drafted No. 1 overall in 2010.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Les Miles has informed LSU athletic officials that he hasn't been contacted by Michigan about the Wolverines' coaching vacancy and has no intention of leaving the Tigers.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette says Miles sought to make his status with LSU clear following reports by news outlets in Michigan, citing unidentified sources, that Miles had been contacted about the Michigan job.

Miles, who is paid $4.3 million annually, is in his 10th season at LSU, a span that included the Tigers' 2007 national title and 2011 Southeastern Conference championship.

HOCKEY

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) - Dallas Eakins was fired as coach of the Edmonton Oilers, who have lost 15 of 16 games and are well on the way to missing the playoffs for the ninth consecutive season.

General manager Craig MacTavish will coach the team until the job is given to Todd Nelson, who is being promoted to interim head coach from Edmonton's American Hockey League affiliate in Oklahoma City. MacTavish did not say when he would return to the front office.
