BC-AP Sports Preview Digest

Some of the sports stories The Associated Press is covering Tuesday. A full Sports Digest will be sent at about 3 p.m. All times EDT:

- The College Football Playoff selection committee releases its first rankings. How similar will they look to the AP Top 25? The poll has unbeaten Mississippi State and Florida State at the top.

- KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The San Francisco Giants try to win their third World Series championship in five seasons when they play the Kansas City Royals in Game 6 on Tuesday night. Ahead 3-2, the Giants will start Jake Peavy against hard-throwing rookie Yordano Ventura.

- PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia 76ers lately can't seem to do anything right. They have botched trades, bumbled draft picks and tied a record for NBA futility last season with 26-straight losses. And it isn't shaping up to be much better this year.

- WEST POINT, N.Y. - First-year Army coach Jeff Monken comments on NCAA recruiting violations in the wake of an incident that included courting high school football players with alcohol and VIP treatment on a raucous bus ride.

- SAN DIEGO - It's great being Meb these days. Crazy, too. Meb Keflezighi already was a big-time marathoner, with a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics and a win in the New York City Marathon in 2009. Then came his inspirational victory in the Boston Marathon a year after the bombings there, and his life went stratospheric.

-PUERTO PLATA, Dominican Republic - Cardinals star Yadier Molina, general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny are expected to attend the memorial service for Oscar Taveras, the highly touted St. Louis prospect who died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic on Sunday.
