Report: Bills' Watkins day-to-day with rib contusion

Aug 18, 7:27 PM

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) A person close to the situation tells the Associated Press that Buffalo Bills receiver Sammy Watkins is day-to-day after tests confirmed a diagnosis of bruised ribs.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team has not provided an update on the first-round pick's status since Watkins was hurt in a 19-16 preseason loss at Pittsburgh on Saturday. Coach Doug Marrone would only say Watkins would not practice Monday.

Watkins' agent Tory Dandy described the injury as being ''just a bruise.'' He added Watkins could have returned during the game after being hurt on the opening drive.

Marrone announced starting left tackle Cordy Glenn has been cleared for team drills. Glenn missed the first three weeks of camp because of an illness.

Bills' Watkins listed as probable for Week 1 vs. Bears

Sep 5, 2:02 PM

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins is officially listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears.

Watkins is battling a rib injury suffered in the Bills' third preseason game and aggravated it in their fifth, but for now it appears he'll be able to play through the ailment.

The No. 4 overall pick is expected to play a major role in the Bills' passing attack, but it would be reassuring to see him develop a bit more chemistry with quarterback EJ Manuel than the pair showed off in the preseason.

Bills' Sammy Watkins returns to practice

Sep 1, 5:44 PM

Buffalo Bills rookie receiver Sammy Watkins is still experiencing soreness after returning to practice for the first time since aggravating a rib injury last week.

The first-round draft pick practiced fully Monday, and says he is preparing to play Sunday, when Buffalo opens the season at Chicago.

Watkins declined to reveal the nature of the injury except to say follow-up tests showed it is something more than bruised ribs.

He was initially hurt in the first quarter of a 19-16 preseason loss at Pittsburgh on Aug. 16. After sitting out one game, Watkins was hit in the same spot in the first quarter of a 23-0 preseason-ending loss to Detroit on Thursday.

Tight end Lee Smith (toe) and linebacker Randell Johnson (ankle) did not practice Monday.

Report: Bills rookie Watkins 'dodged serious injury'

Aug 29, 1:36 PM

The Buffalo Bills can breathe a sigh of relief as it appears the injury that forced first-round pick Sammy Watkins from Thursday's preseason finale isn't a serious one.

Watkins can breathe easy, too, but it may be a little painful for him - the injury was an aggravation of the rib contusion he suffered earlier in the preseason.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, indications are Watkins will be "good to go" when the Bills take the field in Week 1.

It's great news for a Bills offense that failed to generate any significant momentum in the preseason. The team paid a handsome price to move up and select Watkins in the draft - its ninth overall pick, and its first- and fourth-round selections in 2015. The Bills need their rookie wideout to be an impact player.

Bills' Sammy Watkins exits game vs. Lions after re-aggravating rib injury

Aug 28, 8:05 PM

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins was back on the field for the team's preseason finale against the Detroit Lions on Thursday, but he wouldn't stay there long.

The Bills' coaching staff had hoped to get Watkins some extra playing time in advance of the regular season after he missed each of the last two preseason games with bruised ribs, but he appeared to re-injure those ribs in the first quarter on a hard hit from a Lions linebacker when EJ Manuel threw him a pass on a slant route.

"It was a tight throw. He just probably got a little banged up,"Manuel told reporters after the game. "He'll be fine."

Watkins was examined on the sidelines by the team's medical staff for about 10 minutes before being escorted to the locker room for further examination.

"Once the trainers cleared him to play, I was excited about it," explained head coach Doug Marrone. "You never know. X-rays, tests, things like that. Shows up one day, doesn't show up the next day. Could be out, could be in. Depends on the player. Could be a week, could be four to six weeks, could be longer. I'm not getting into all of that."

Bills' Sammy Watkins active for preseason finale

Aug 28, 7:27 PM

The Buffalo Bills' offense will get a nice boost on Thursday night when they take on the Detroit Lions in their preseason finale.

First-round pick Sammy Watkins returns to the lineup for the first time since injuring his ribs in the team's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Getting on the field for a preseason game isn't a big deal in and of itself, but the rookie wide receiver could surely use some additional reps in game action prior to the regular season opener against the Chicago Bears.

Bills' Watkins practices with 'no limitations' Monday

Aug 25, 2:05 PM

After sitting out Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a rib contusion, Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins was back on the practice field Monday.

The fact that Watkins wasn't limited is a great sign he'll be ready to roll come Week 1.

Watkins and second-year quarterback EJ Manuel need as many reps together as possible in the preseason to build chemistry.

Bills' Watkins to miss Saturday's preseason game vs. Buccaneers

Aug 23, 3:52 PM

Still recovering from a rib contusion, Sammy Watkins will be held out of the Buffalo Bills' preseason game Saturday vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, per ESPN's Mike Rodak.

Watkins did return to practice earlier this week, albeit in limited fashion, so he should have a good chance to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Even so, Watkins being forced to miss the preseason game in which the starters will see their most extended action is a blow to a passing offense that needs all the reps it can get.

Bills' Watkins returns to practice in limited capacity

Aug 19, 3:32 PM

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Sammy Watkins returned to practice on Tuesday, although it looks like he is far from 100 percent.

The fact that Watkins was in pads is an encouraging sign for the Bills after he suffered a rib injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers just four days ago.

It will be interesting to see if the rookie is healthy enough to suit up Saturday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Teams typically use this week as a dress rehearsal for the season, with starters playing at least a half.

Report: Sammy Watkins' rib injury not considered serious

Aug 16, 10:11 PM

Buffalo Bills fans can breathe a sigh of relief, as NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports that the rib injury sustained by rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins on Saturday is "nothing serious."

Watkins left the Bills' preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first quarter after taking a knee to his side from rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier.

Through three preseason games, Watkins has three receptions for 21 yards.

Bills rookie Watkins injures rib in preseason game vs. Steelers

Aug 16, 7:55 PM

Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Sammy Watkins was forced from Saturday's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with a rib injury.

Per Chris Brown of the team website, Watkins was injured on the Bills' opening possession after Steelers rookie inside linebacker Ryan Shazier lifted his leg to avoid falling teammate Cortez Allen. Shazier's leg collided with Watkins' rib cage, and Watkins went down immediately in pain.

After being tended to by team physicians, Watkins was taken to the locker room for a full evaluation.
