Report: Expectation around league is 6-8 game suspension for Colts owner Jim Irsay

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's inaction with regards to disciplining Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay has been widely criticized, but it sounds like a hefty suspension could be coming in the near future.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk passes along word from ESPN's Adam Schefter that some league insiders expect Irsay to receive a six to eight-game suspension.

Schefter also reports that a fine of $1 million is a possibility.

Irsay was arrested in March for possession of prescription drugs and operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

As Florio notes, it's hard to say what suspending an owner would even mean for an NFL team. Most owners aren't involved in day-to-day football operations. Florio speculates the Colts could be penalized by losing their share of TV revenues.

Goodell is in a bit of a precarious position here. Irsay's actions warrant discipline without question, but suspending an owner isn't as easy as suspending a player. Essentially, the owners are Goodell's bosses.

Should owners be held to an even higher standard of conduct than players? Many people believe the answer to that question is yes. Goodell's ruling will establish a precedent that tells us all whether he believes so.
