Report: Peterson to visit Patriots on Monday

The defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots are reportedly to be presented with an opportunity to add one of the best players of his generation.

Adrian Peterson will visit the Patriots on Monday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Peterson became a free agent when the Minnesota Vikings opted not to exercise their option on his contract in February.

The 32-year-old is coming off an injury-truncated season, tearing his meniscus in Week 2 against the Green Bay Packers, but returned for a brief stint in December.

If Peterson signs with the Patriots, he may be the most decorated running back to ever play under Bill Belichick's regime. Peterson has been named to seven Pro Bowls, won the NFL rushing title three times, most recently in 2015, and captured MVP honors in 2012.

Peterson previously visited with the Seattle Seahawks in March.

The veteran may become the latest coup in an aggressive offseason for the Patriots, who have already netted Brandin Cooks, Dwayne Allen, and Kony Ealy in trades.

LeGarrette Blount, who led the NFL last season with 18 touchdowns, has yet to re-sign with the Patriots, and if Peterson inks a contract, he'll be presented with an opportunity to feature as the lead back. James White and Dion Lewis are also expected to feature in the Patriots' rotation.
