Packers' Montgomery will remain RB, wants to change jersey number

Ty Montgomery will remain a running back in 2017, Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Thursday.

The converted receiver was forced into a backfield role by injuries, but enjoyed the most success of his young career in the new position.

McCarthy told reporters Montgomery is looking to change his jersey number from 88, a receiver's number, to a running back's number (20-49).

The Packers are expected to add depth at running back to complement Montgomery, who is much more in the mold of a third-down back than an early-down hammer.

Montgomery finished the regular season with 77 rushing attempts for 457 yards (5.9 yards per carry) and three touchdowns. He added 44 catches for 348 yards.
