Bortles to remain starter under Marrone

The Jacksonville Jaguars' underperforming coach was let go, but they're sticking with their underperforming quarterback - for now, at least.

The Jaguars introduced former assistant head coach Doug Marrone on Monday as their interim coach for the final two weeks, and he confirmed that Blake Bortles will stay in as the team's starter.

"Blake will be our starting quarterback," Marrone said at a team press conference Monday. "(Offensive coordinator) Nathaniel Hackett, myself, (general manager) Dave (Caldwell) - we firmly believe that Blake Bortles is our quarterback right now.

"The quarterback position - when you win, they get too much of the credit, and when you lose, they get a lot of the blame. ... It's a fashion of a lot of people who are around you."

While Bortles will finish off the 2016 season under center, Caldwell said that the next coach won't be required to continue starting the Jaguars' 2014 third-overall pick, or any other player.

"There won't be any mandates for anybody who comes in," Caldwell said. "There are no untouchables for anybody in this organization, including myself. Regardless of how people got here, they have to live up to their abilities."

In his third season, Bortles has recorded 3,279 passing yard with 21 touchdowns and 16 interceptions while rushing for 331 yards and three scores.
