Cowboys' Tony Romo: May not be ready until Week 9

Romo (back) still has some swelling around his injury, making Nov. 6 at Cleveland (Week 9) a more realistic return date than Oct. 30 against the Eagles, ESPN's Ed Werder reports.

Analysis:

The majority of recent reports have hinted at a possible Week 8 return, but even with Monday's MRI revealing good progress, Romo won't necessarily be game-ready by the initially targeted Oct. 30 date. Speaking to 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday, Cowboys owner/GM Jerry Jones said Romo's compression fracture has fully healed, but Jones added that the 36-year-old quarterback still needs to work on strengthening his core, in addition to general conditioning to return to football shape, ESPN.com's Todd Archer reports. Jones declined to provide a timetable for Romo's return to game action, but it's safe to assume Dak Prescott will get at least one more start Sunday in Green Bay, with the Cowboys then taking a Week 7 bye. As for a possible QB controversy, Jones said Monday that Romo is still the No. 1 quarterback, but the Cowboys owner/GM did make some other statements that could be taken as hints that the issue isn't 100 percent settled. Jones added fuel to the fire during Tuesday morning's interview, saying that the team's quarterback situation requires "a tolerance for ambiguity", according to David Helman of DallasCowboys.com. The only thing that's entirely clear is that the next few weeks will be interesting.
