Report: Prescott has chance to keep job after Romo's return

The hype is real in Dallas.

Not only has Dak Prescott seemingly given the Cowboys a quarterback capable of leading the offense until Tony Romo can return, but there also appears to be a chance that he plays his way into the starting job beyond that point.

Prescott will have an opportunity, however slight, to earn himself the lead role even when Romo is cleared to play, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

"From my understanding, talking to Cowboys people over the last several weeks, the door is open, though slightly, for Dak Prescott to come in and impress enough, and potentially take Tony Romo's job, which is something that would have sounded crazy just a couple months ago," Rapoport explained Sunday on "NFL GameDay First."

Rapoport also went on to reference a conversation with Stephen Jones, where the Cowboys' executive vice president compared the current quarterback situation to that of Drew Bledsoe and Tom Brady.

Whether the Cowboys would truly consider sitting down their four-time Pro Bowl quarterback in favor of a fourth-round rookie remains to be seen. In reality, it's entirely possible that any and all hints about such a move are dropped as a way of instilling confidence in Prescott.

But given Romo's inability to stay on the field of late, there would certainly be some thoughts of sticking with Prescott if he can manage to build upon his preseason brilliance in the weeks ahead.

Prescott completed 78 percent of his 50 pass attempts across the first three preseason games, racking up 454 yards, five touchdowns, and no interceptions.

He and the rest of the Cowboys' offense will be put to the test Sunday when they take on a new-look New York Giants defense.
