Chiefs try out Derrick Thomas' son

The Kansas City Chiefs are giving the son of legendary linebacker Derrick Thomas a tryout at their rookie minicamp.

Donnell Alexander, a running back out of Akron, has been participating in the team's rookie offseason activities after a tumultuous college career that saw him transfer out of Colorado State in 2014.

"It's a surreal experience," Alexander said Monday, according to Herbie Teope of ChiefsDigest.com. "Like I said, no matter what, I think I would have come here regardless - at least tried out - because this is where I would love to be, a Chief."

Alexander recognizes the impact his father, who died in 2000 following a car accident, had on not just the Chiefs franchise, but everyone around the league.

"When I was in Colorado, I did a camp and I had a lot of people come up and speak to me," Alexander said. "And just the way that they said they idolized my father, to me, that was amazing because they have no idea, really, who he is. But for them to be a die-hard fan, I like that, that's showing me a lot."

While Alexander has strong roots in Kansas City, he's a long shot to make the Chiefs' roster. Perennial Pro Bowler Jamaal Charles is flanked by breakout stars Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware.

If he impresses in minicamp, though, there's a chance he could get an opportunity to prove himself in training camp with the Chiefs or, more likely, another team.
