The Washington Redskins locked up one of their offensive cornerstones for the foreseeable future Thursday, announcing that tight end Jordan Reed has signed a multi-year contract extension.

The team didn't release terms, but a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that it's a five-year, $50-million extension.

The deal contains $22 million in guaranteed money, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, and means he's under contract through the 2021 season.

Reed had one year remaining on his rookie deal, and was set to earn just over $1.8 million next season before agreeing to the extension.

"It means a lot that the Redskins invested that kind of money in me. I'll show them that they made a good investment and I'll prove them right in making me one of the highest paid (tight ends) in the league," Reed said to ESPN's John Keim.

The 25-year-old has long been recognized as one of the league's most talented tight ends, but nagging injuries throughout the first two years of his career meant he was unable to reach the production to match his skill set.

He finally put together a dominant season in 2015, however, catching 87 passes for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns in 14 games. He missed two games due to a concussion.

The former third-round pick's been rewarded for that breakout campaign, and now shares the distinction of being the highest-paid player at his position in terms of yearly salary, matching the figure for Seattle Seahawks superstar Jimmy Graham.
