Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Will Smith, who was fatally shot following a car accident on Saturday night, may have been involved in a hit-and-run incident with the vehicle of the man accused of his murder, a video released by WVUE FOX 8 News shows.

The incident allegedly happened minutes before the three-car crash that preceded Smith's death. The vehicles involved, a Hummer and a Mercedes SUV, match the vehicle descriptions of Cardell Hayes and Smith, respectively, police confirmed.

Surveillance videos obtained by FOX 8 show what appears to be Smith's vehicle rear-ending the Hummer, whose driver, ostensibly Hayes, then attempts to pull over to the side of the road. The Mercedes then speeds off, with the Hummer following in pursuit.

Smith's murder is believed to have happened a little more than a block away from the alleged hit-and-run incident.

Hayes' acting attorney, John Fuller, spoke about the incident in further detail.

"Prior to the actions that lead to Mr. Smith's death, my client was involved in a hit-and-run," Fuller said. "Someone hit him and failed to pull over. My client trailed behind this person in an effort to get their license plate number. My client also called 911."

Hayes has been charged with second-degree murder and could be facing further charges for the shooting of Smith's wife, Racquel, who suffered two non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the leg.
