NFL announces 2016 compensatory draft picks

Debby Wong / USA TODAY Sports

The NFL has announced the 2016 compensatory draft picks, with 13 teams earning additional selections in this year's draft.

A total of 33 compensatory picks were awarded across rounds three to six.

Compensatory picks are awarded based on a formula that takes into account each team's losses and gains in free agency. Teams that lost more or better free agents than they signed last offseason were awarded compensatory picks in this year's draft.

The Detroit Lions, who lost Ndamukong Suh to the Miami Dolphins, were awarded the highest compensatory pick: the 33rd pick in the third round (95th overall).
