Report: Redskins, Cousins break off contract extension talks
The Washington Redskins and quarterback Kirk Cousins have broken off contract extension talks and no further discussions are scheduled, a team source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Cousins is set to become a free agent in March. Both sides have expressed a desire to work out a long-term deal before then, but it appears far more likely no agreement will be reached and the Redskins will place the franchise tag on Cousins.
Under the tag, Cousins would earn about $19.7 million on a one-year contract. It would provide the Redskins the chance to ensure Cousins' surprising 2015 season wasn't a one-year wonder before locking him up long term.
Cousins passed for 4,166 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions and led the Redskins to an NFC East title in 2015, finally providing the quarterbacking stability the team has sorely lacked in recent seasons.
