Toronto FC boss Vanney sees marked improvement in Jozy Altidore's fitness

Toronto FC head coach Greg Vanney has whipped his boys into shape ahead of the 2016 season.

Reports of a weight-loss regimen for star striker Jozy Altidore, to go along with the club's influx of new defensive talent, has Vanney feeling his side is more prepared ahead of his third season at the helm of the club.

"Because the group came in fitter and is more established we feel we're in a more advanced position now," Vanney told the Toronto Sun's Kurt Larson. "We got a lot of guys chances to show themselves. It's what we wanted to get out of this first stage. We're pleased with where we're at."

Among those impressing Vanney in camp is Altidore, who has been on fire with the United States men's national team of late, scoring against both Iceland and Canada in a pair of friendlies - the latter coming in the form of a late game-winning goal.

While reigning league MVP Sebastian Giovinco has been lighting it up in preseason, Vanney seems most pleased with the progress Altidore has made since the end of last season, particularly with his physical shape.

"Jozy's scoring is one part. But I also thought he looked active (with the U.S.)," Vanney told Larson. "He's getting himself into good spots. He looks busy and engaged."

"He's a competitor," the coach continued. "He wants to be successful. He wants to win and score goals. We mutually agreed we all wanted him to come in a bit lighter and able to move and be the active kind of forward he’s capable of being. It’s a credit to him. He spent the offseason with his family and was very disciplined with his approach."
