West Ham has snuck past Everton on Monday to lure defender Sam Byram to Upton Park, Leeds United president Massimo Cellino has confirmed.
Earlier in the day, Everton had been discussing terms with Byram ahead of a £3.7-million transfer. But Byram reportedly saw less of an opportunity at Goodison Park, where Seamus Coleman has established himself at the right-back position.
"I'm really sorry for Everton because they really acted like gentlemen, but Sam chose West Ham," said Cellino.
Byram was set to become a free agent in the summer after rejecting a contract extension with Leeds.
