Mike Richards came within an inch of scoring his first goal with the Washington Capitals.
New York Rangers goaltender Antti Raanta denied the veteran forward with a sprawling stick save Sunday, and the puck straddled the goal line but somehow stayed out.
It was Richards' second game with the Capitals, who signed him to a one-year deal earlier this month.
Justin Williams notched a hat trick Sunday, leading Washington to a 5-2 win.
