The NHL expects National Women's Hockey League player Denna Laing to sue the league after suffering a serious spinal injury at the Outdoor Women's Classic on Dec. 31 at Gillette Stadium, reports Josh Kosman of the New York Post.
Laing, a forward for the Boston Pride, crashed into the boards during an outdoor game with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League's Les Canadiennes and was taken off the ice on a stretcher.
Her family later confirmed that she has limited movement of her arms and no feeling in her legs, while Laing has been providing further updates on social media.
According to Kosman, there were some reports that the ice surface was soft at the time of the accident. Players did sign a liability waiver prior to the game, but that was based on the ice being in playable condition, a source added.
In a statement released after the extent of Laing's injuries was announced, she said, "We made history that day and I would never take those moments back."
Laing also is expected to sue the NFL's New England Patriots, which owns the stadium, as well as the two women's leagues.
