Euro 2016 draw, Group F: Portugal expected to top unspectacular section

Reuters

The last of the groups to be revealed during Saturday's draw in Paris lacked drama, as the tournament favourites and proverbial dark horses had already come out of their respective pots.

That will be just fine with Portugal.

The Selecao, perennial underachievers on the international stage, will fancy their chances in a section that includes Iceland - by no means a pushover - Austria, and minnows Hungary.

Favourite

Arguably the weakest of the teams in Pot 1 heading into the draw, Portugal, led by captain and scoring machine Cristiano Ronaldo, will be delighted with a favourable position that should result in a straightforward berth in the knockout stages.

It's now or never for one of the world's most frustrating, yet talented, national sides.

Fighting for second place

Sleep on Iceland at your own peril. Just ask the Netherlands.

The Nordic island nation, which made history by becoming the smallest country to ever reach the UEFA European Championship - it's estimated population stands at nearly 330,000 - turned heads during qualification, and for good reason.

Boasting an imperious defense that conceded only six goals in 10 matches, one of the newest darlings of European football will likely need to fight off Austria to join group favourite Portugal in the knockout stages.

Best player

This one isn't hard.

Though age has changed his game, slowly turning the once-dynamic winger into more of a traditional striker who does his best work finding lapses inside the penalty area and pouncing, Ronaldo remains among the most devastating scorers on the planet, and one of the very best the sport has to offer.

As is always the case at the international level, the Real Madrid megastar will be tasked with dragging his nation into the knockout stages - and beyond.

Honourable mentions: David Alaba (Austria), Gylfi Sigurdsson (Iceland)

Must-see match

The opening day of Group F action provides the tastiest matchup, as Portugal meets everybody's newest darling, Iceland.

The latter, which made waves with its historic qualification for the competition, will be looking to turn the group on its head right from the get-go, while Ronaldo and his compatriots will be keen to avoid slipping up and beginning the competition on the back foot.

You know what they say about losing your first match in an international competition ...
