DFS: 5 Multi-Category Contributors

Dennis Wierzbicki-USA TODAY Sport / reuters

Multi-category contributors are the apple of the eye of daily fantasy basketball owners.

High scorers will always be the primary targets but insurance can't be overlooked. On the off-chance Carmelo Anthony or Kyrie Irving has a tough night in the scoring department, they may not be able to salvage their fantasy scoring via the other statistics.

It's easy enough to understand what type of production you should expect from each of the five starting positions in the NBA. Guards are supposed to rack up assists on top of points, while forwards and centers should bolster their stat lines with rebounds.

Some major DFS sites award bonuses for double-doubles, making players who contribute at elite levels in two categories a key to success. Consistent high-level production is tough to find - and it will cost you. Targeting players with consistent production across the stat sheet is the safest way to go, while maintaining upside and some measure of cap relief.

The following five players fill multiple categories at a variety of positions (with 2014-15 statistics):

SG Gordon Hayward, Jazz

19.3 4.9 4.1 1.4 0.4

Hayward ranked no lower than fourth on the Jazz in any of the above five categories last season, and increased his scoring average by over three points from his 2013-14 mark. Hayward has missed just 11 games over the past two seasons, after missing a total of 36 in the first three years of his career.

The Jazz rely extremely heavily on Hayward at both ends of the court. Although he will likely want to play for a winner at some point soon, Hayward's statistics benefit from playing for a team that has picked in the top-half of the first round in the previous three drafts.

Hayward's upside resides in his scoring and three-point shooting, but he's more than capable of making up for a lackluster night with production in other areas. He's an extremely strong play whenever the Jazz are expected to be in a tight-scoring game.

C Nerlens Noel, 76ers

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG
9.9 8.1 1.7 1.8 1.9

Noel finished inside the NBA's top 10 in both blocks and steals last season. While he wasn't an elite scorer or rebounder, Noel found ways to contribute in a strong rookie campaign. The presence of rookie PF Jahlil Okafor may cut into Noel's production this upcoming season, but he'll also benefit from his year of experience and a more consistent starting four around him.

The 76ers used 41 different starting lineups in 2014-15. That's not a good recipe for consistent play from any player, let alone a rookie big man. Should Philadelphia be able to find three players to regularly pair with Noel and Okafor, it's reasonable to expect a boost in Noel's offensive production.

He'll start the season as an affordable piece, and he should be targeted on a regular basis until his price begins to climb.

SG Victor Oladipo, Magic

17.9 4.2 4.1 1.7 0.3

Oladipo showed major improvement in his sophomore season. He averaged nearly 3.5 more field goal attempts than he did as a rookie and that resulted in over four more points per game. Oladipo also cut down on his turnovers while keeping his statistics fairly similar to his rookie numbers.

A consistent free-throw shooter and a reliable option from the field, Oladipo also has the ability to contribute from beyond the arc. With three pointers made counting for even more fantasy points, Oladipo makes for a very well-rounded option.

SF Kawhi Leonard, Spurs

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG
16.5 7.2 2.5 2.3 0.8

In addition to being named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year in 2014-15, Leonard was a strong contributor across the stat sheet. Leonard set career highs in each of the major statistical categories while averaging the most minutes of his four-year career.

The addition of PF LaMarcus Aldridge will alter the Spurs' game plans on both ends of the court, as he will be a far bigger contributor than the departed Tiago Splitter. The Spurs are ready to make a seamless transition from the big three of PF Tim Duncan, PG Tony Parker and SG Manu Ginobili into the hands of the younger Aldridge and Leonard.

Leonard will likely assume more of the ball handling duties, providing him with far more opportunities for assists. He's also likely to increase his own scoring with Duncan, Parker and Ginobili playing complimentary roles.

SG Jimmy Butler, Bulls

PPG RPG APG SPG BPG
20.0 5.8 3.3 1.8 0.6

Butler was named to the NBA's All-Defensive Second Team last season, but his offensive prowess cannot be ignored. It was a career year for Butler in terms of points, rebound, assists and blocks per game in 2014-15. He led the Bulls in both points and steals per game.

Due to the injury risk(s) surrounding Derrick Rose, Butler is expected to take on an even bigger role offensively in 2015-16, and he has his eyes set on taking over the point guard role.

Butler was frequently underpriced on many DFS sites in 2014-15, due to his lack of elite-level production in any one area. That will be something to watch for in the upcoming season, as his complete game offers many sources of production.
