Wayne Rooney equals Sir Bobby Charlton's scoring record with 49th goal for England

Forty-nine down, one to go.

England striker Wayne Rooney now finds himself on equal footing with one of the country's most iconic footballers, as the Manchester United star scored the 49th international goal of his career Saturday against San Marino to equal the Three Lions' all-time record that had long been held by Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney, who also wears the armband for his national side, moved level with Charlton in the 13th minute of Saturday's Euro 2016 qualifying match, slotting home a contentious penalty after the referee adjudged - seemingly incorrectly - that a defender pulled back John Stones while he was attempting to reach a cross.

Rooney, of course, was more than happy to take the opportunity and calmly slot the ball into the bottom corner.

History beckons, but it will have to wait until England's next match - against Switzerland on Tuesday - as Rooney was substituted in the 58th minute of the one-sided contest.

Fittingly, the match is being played at Wembley. What better place for an England great to set the country's most notable football record?
