Report: Tottenham failed in late chase for Southampton's Victor Wanyama

Tottenham Hotspur was willing to spend £20 million on Southampton midfielder Victor Wanyama, and was also offering to send Andros Townsend or Erik Lamela as part of the deal.

This report from the Evening Standard only serves to compound Tottenham fans' woes after a disappointing end to the summer transfer window.

Repeated attempts to pry Saido Berahino from West Bromwich Albion failed, leaving Spurs extremely short on strikers. But now it seems that attempts to bolster the team's midfield floundered, too.

Southampton was unwilling to sell the Kenyan midfielder, taking a similar stance to now-Manchester United man Morgan Schneiderlin last season.

Wanyama has been left out of first team action recently as he has not been in the right mental state amid the Spurs' interest.

With the 24-year-old now at the club until at least January, manager Ronald Koeman will work to motivate Wanyama so he can play another integral part of this Premier League campaign.

The Saints visit West Brom on September 12th.
