Encarnacion leads Blue Jays through historic month

The Toronto Blue Jays may have lost to the Cleveland Indians 4-2 on Monday, but that wasn't going to spoil a historic month by the franchise.

Toronto ended August with a 21-6 record, good for a .778 winning percentage, which was the highest in club history for a single month.

The impressive record allowed the Blue Jays to end August with 74-57 record overall and a 1 1/2 game lead over the New York Yankees for the lead in the American League East.

Leading the Blue Jays incredible month were Edwin Encarnacion and MVP candidate Josh Donaldson.

Encarnacion, who was recently named AL player of the week continued to crush the ball, extending his hitting steak to 26 games, matching former Blue Jays Shannon Stewart (1999) and John Olerud (1993) for the second longest streak in franchise history. He sits just two games shy of the franchise record owned by Shawn Green, who accomplished the feat in 1999.

The 32-year-old slugger also tied the franchise record for most RBIs in one game against the Detroit Tigers on Friday, lighting them up for nine in a three-home run performance.

Encarnacion and Donaldson also became co-owners of the franchise record for most RBIs in a month with 35, making them the first teammates to do so since June of 1950 when the Boston Red Sox trio of Ted Williams, Walt Dropo and Bobby Doerr managed to hit the mark.
