Baylor's Sam Ukwuachu found guilty of sexual assault

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

A jury has found Baylor defensive end Sam Ukwuachu guilty of sexually assaulting a former Bears soccer player in October 2013.

The trial jumped right to the punishment phase, with witnesses from out of state testifying before having to catch planes, the Waco Tribune-Herald's Tommy Witherspoon reports.

Prosecutors issued subpoenas for records from Boise State, his former school, and testimonies from a number of people, including a woman at the school with whom Ukwuachu allegedly had an abusive relationship, according to Witherspoon.

Baylor issued a statement following the jury's verdict:

The defensive end had yet to play for Baylor after transferring from Boise State when he was dismissed for a violation of team rules. Ukwuachu had been suspended by Baylor over a year ago as a result of the incident.

Head coach Art Briles denied knowing anything about the incident prior to bringing in Ukwuachu.

"I talked with Chris Petersen personally," Briles told Max Olson of ESPN. "No mention of anything beyond Sam being depressed, needing to come home. It's unfortunate for everybody concerned. That's really about it. Our timeline was followed by what the standards were here."
