James to cover college scholarships for students who complete program

Ken Blaze / USA TODAY Sports

LeBron James didn't go to college, but he recognizes the value of an education for the general population.

The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar announced Thursday that youngsters who complete his I PROMISE foundation's educational program will earn scholarships to the University of Akron. The scholarship will cover tuition and the university's general service fee - currently $9,500 per year.

Known as Wheels for Education, James' youth program helps school children in the Akron, Ohio area who are identified as being in need of academic mentoring.

The University of Akron is also renaming its College of Education after James' foundation.
